“Two things are immediately obvious from a listen to Eric Harper’s self-titled album. The first is that he is one hell of a guitarist, and the second is that he is a painfully earnest songwriter. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but let’s deal with the first point.
The Nanaimo-based Harper is a conservatory-trained classical musician with an evident taste for Andalusian flamenco and Portuguese fado, as he demonstrates in jaw-droppingly fluid nylon-string runs in the tracks “Cream and Suga’ ” and “Starry Night”. Lest you think that this album belongs in the world-music category (alongside the artist’s previous release, Romper a Madrugada), know that Harper frames his six-string work in songs that fit best in the admittedly nebulous category of “adult alternative”. And while it may be dumbing things down a bit to say that the resulting sound is like Dave Matthews jamming with the Gipsy Kings, that should at least give you the general idea.
Harper’s lyrics, like those to “You Complete Me”, tend toward the heart-on-sleeve school of love poetry. (Mind you, the frankly spiritual “Say” suggests that the object of Harper’s affections might be a deity rather than another person in at least some of the other songs.) If you find that stuff a little icky—shame on you for being so cynical—try “Rain” on for size. A first-person account of an unspecified deluge—an end-of-all-things tsunami, perhaps, or maybe even the great flood of the Old Testament—the album-opening number contains the declaration “You want to cry, you want to scream/Baby that’s all right with me.” Whether read as indifference to suffering or an admonition to remain calm in the face of disaster, it’s powerful stuff, and it shows what Harper is capable of when he sets his mind to darker matters.”
The album can also be ordered on itunes.

A lush blend of Mediterranean melodies with complex world harmonies. A must have for any World Music lover. Don’t miss out on this amazing musical adventure where Eric can be heard singing in the romantic language of Portuguese.
